Florida State is a huge party school—there’s no denying it. Sometimes it’s easy to get swept up into the party scene and forgot the more important aspects of college, like the whole going-to-class thing. But in the end, it’s up to you to make a conscious effort to not go out too much and to always get your work done. Though sometimes easier than said done, finding the perfect balance between partying and school is great way to guarantee your success and a good GPA.

Film Description: Director John Landis put himself on the map with this low-budget, fabulously successful comedy, which made a then-astounding 62 million dollars and started a slew of careers for its cast in the process. National Lampoon's Animal House is set in 1962 on the campus of Faber College in Faber, PA.

The first glimpse we get of the campus is the statue of its founder Emil Faber, on the base of which is inscribed the motto, "Knowledge Is Good." Incoming freshmen Larry "Pinto" Kroger (Tom Hulce) and Kent "Flounder" Dorfman (Stephen Furst) find themselves rejected by the pretentious Omega fraternity, and instead pledge to Delta House.

The Deltas are a motley fraternity of rejects and maladjusted undergraduates (some approaching their late twenties) whose main goal -- seemingly accomplished in part by their mere presence on campus -- is disrupting the staid, peaceful, rigidly orthodox, and totally hypocritical social order of the school, as represented by the Omegas and the college's dean, Vernon Wormer (John Vernon).

Dean Wormer decides that this is the year he's going to get the Deltas expelled and their chapter decertified; he places the fraternity on "double secret probation" and, with help from Omega president Greg Marmalard (James Daughton) and hard-nosed member Doug Neidermeyer (Mark Metcalf), starts looking for any pretext on which to bring the members of the Delta fraternity up on charges.

The Deltas, oblivious to the danger they're in, are having a great time, steeped in irreverence, mild debauchery, and occasional drunkenness, led by seniors Otter (Tim Matheson), Hoover (James Widdoes), D-Day (Bruce McGill), Boon (Peter Riegert), and pledge master John "Bluto" Blutarsky (John Belushi). They're given enough rope to hang themselves, but even then manage to get into comical misadventures on a road trip (where they arrange an assignation with a group of young ladies from Emily Dickinson University).

Finally, they are thrown out of school, and, as a result, stripped of their student deferments (and, thus, eligible for the draft). They decide to commit one last, utterly senseless (and screamingly funny) slapstick act of rebellion, making a shambles of the university's annual homecoming parade, and, in the process, getting revenge on the dean, the Omegas, and everyone else who has ever gone against them.

The 1978 classic college comedy. At a 1962 College, Dean Vernon Wormer is determined to expel the entire Delta Tau Chi Fraternity, but those troublemakers have other plans for him.

It's back to school and what better way to celebrate Fall than going to a big screen showing of Animal House presented by the Westport Cinema Initiative. The screening will be hosted by the film's producer, Matty Simmons. Simmons was the Publisher of National Lampoon Magazine from1970 until 1989 and produced all of the National Lampoon Vacation films.

The film will be shown on Saturday September 17, at 8 :00PM at Toquet Hall with the after party to follow at Bobby Q's. In addition to food and drink after party admission includes Beer Pong and perhaps a toga or two. You can purchase tickets online: westportcinema.org; at Bobby Q's or at the door. LYRICS: (One, two)
(One, two, one, two, three)

Hey baby won't you take a chance?
Say that you'll let me have this dance

Let's dance, let's dance
Do the twist, the stomp, the mashed potato too,
Any old dance that you wanna do
But let's dance, let's dance

Hey baby, yeah, you thrill me so
Hold me tight, don't you let me go

But let's dance, let's dance
We'll do the twist, the stomp, the mashed potato too
Any old dance that you wanna do
But let's dance, well let's dance

OK, wail now.

Oh, yeah
(musical interlude)
Hey, baby, if you're all alone
Maybe you'll let me walk you home

But let's dance, let's dance
We'll do the twist, the stomp, the mashed potato too,
Any old dance that you wanna do
But let's dance, let's dance

Hey, baby, things are swingin' right
Yes, I know that this is the night

Let's dance, let's dance
We'll do the twist, the stomp, the mashed potato too
Any old dance that you wanna do
But let's dance, let's dance

But let's dance
But let's dance
But let's dance

Partying and college have always gone hand-in-hand. Kind of like chips and salsa, Taco Bell and drunkenness, or Beavis and Butthead. They are two things that can exist without each other; you can still attend college and not party, or party and not attend college. But together they create the perfect balance. It’s nice after a long week of learning to hang out with friends on the weekend and let off some steam. Go to a few parties, maybe meet some new people, and overall just relax and have a little fun.

Partying and college, if done right, can create a harmonious balance in which you are on top of your school work, yet at the same time still leading a very active social life. Students who are able to do this will, in my opinion, get the most out of the college experience. Good grades, lots of friends, and of course fun stories to tell your children—or even some stories you will never, ever tell your children. Either way, you’re having a really good time and still maintaining a good GPA.

In general, I’d say I’ve done a pretty good job of balancing the two. But for some reason, this semester it has become increasingly harder. I’m finding that balancing my social life and school is not quite as easy as it once was. Maybe it’s because I’m taking harder classes or more likely, because I’m going out too much and blowing off my responsibilities. It’s really difficult to stay in and study, especially on a weekend, when all of you’re friends are going out to a huge party.

I think sometimes it’s hard for students to balance party life and school life simply due to the large number of parties and club events that are always going on in Tallahassee. You can literally go out any night of the week and find something to do.

Whether it be at the strip or midtown or even at some random person’s apartment, there is always something going on. As for parties, students will pretty much always think of any excuse to throw one. And I mean any. I’ve been to some really obscurely themed parties that were clearly last minute type of things. People just like to throw parties for the sake of throwing parties. Just the other weekend, my friends, who don’t really like football, threw a Super Bowl party.

The Go! Team at the Mezzanine in San Francisco
online movie ticket

(Project 365 Day 365 (actually 366))

(Two more photos from the concert here and here.)

[Because I accidentally labeled two days Day 86, I was actually done with Project 365 yesterday, though I thought it would be today. Look at yesterday's entry for more details. I decided to write my end-of-project notes there, since this entry's comment is going to be long enough as it is...]

Today was an eventful day. First of all, I've been having kind of a bad week. So I was looking forward to tonight's The Go! Team concert. (They're this awesome band that's a mixture of 60s/70s pop, 80s action movie theme music, hip-hop, and cheerleader cheers!) I had bought two tickets, hoping to find someone to go with me, but I couldn't find anyone! I eventually I asked around at work, but all I found was someone else who also got two tickets but couldn't find a buddy. :P We decided to meet up at the show. The tickets were only , so eating the cost of the spare ticket wasn't a big deal.

Meanwhile, another friend mentioned that he's going to a screening Justin Lin's new movie. (Justin Lin directed the "milestone in Asian-America cinema" Better Luck Tomorrow. (Personally, I found Harold and Kumar to be a bigger breakthrough for Asian-American cinema.) Lin then "went Hollywood" and made Annapolis and The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. Now he's returned to his indie roots and made a mockumentary set in the 70s about trying to cast a double for Bruce Lee after his death in order to finish off Game of Death.) The director was going to be there, too, so I was curious.

I was running a little late. I had to go home after work to grab some stuff, including the concert tickets, and I couldn't find them! I eventually did, but that wasted some precious time. Then it started raining, and traffic slowed to a crawl on the highway. I noticed I was going to be at least 45 minutes late to the movie, so even though I already bought the ticket online, I decided to skip it. Oh well. More ticket money wasted.

I grabbed some dinner at a Korean place instead. (I love how at this place, when I ordered the rice bowl, they first gave me some Korean pancakes before the standard Korean appetizers, and then they gave me huge bowl of tofu stew on the side as well. One time when I was there they actually gave me free fish.)

Okay, so then I get to the venue, and I mention to the doorman that I have an extra ticket I'd like to get rid of. He tells me to go over to the line of people waiting to get tickets and just sell it to them. I go over there, and this big bouncer tells me I have to go around to the back of the line to sell my ticket. I'm a bit confused. Meanwhile, one of the guys in line who was about to go to the window says, "I'll buy it right now." The bouncer goes, "No no no. This is exactly what you can't do!" He directs me around the line to the back and tells me to do my business there. (I'm sure they had policies and all, but I didn't appreciate his attitude.) The guy who said he'd buy my ticket just gets his ticket from the window. I ask the guys in the back of the line, and they say they all have will-call already. So I think, screw this, decide not to bother trying to sell it, and just head on in.

As I walk in through the front door, my pager goes off! I'm on duty this week at work, which means that I need to go diagnose problems... Thing is, my normal phone broke last week, and I'm using an old phone with older phone numbers. I wrote down some of my friends' numbers on a sheet of paper, but I forgot to write down my coworkers' numbers. I want to ignore the page. I really don't want to have to go home at this point. But I don't have any of my coworkers' phone numbers to hand it off to someone else! I'm really stressing out at this point. All this crazy stuff happening, and now this!

Luckily, I eventually figure out how to use my pager to send text messages to my coworkers, and another on duty coworker tells me he'll take care of the problem. *Whew!* I breathe a huge sigh of relief at this point. I wasn't going to be able to enjoy the concert with this hanging over my head!

The concert, luckily, was awesome. The Go! Team is kinda weird in that it actually started out as an album recorded in some dude's parents' kitchen, and not as live gigs. There are lots of sampled cheerleading chants and such that are replaced by different singers in the live version. And a lot of what I thought was horns on the album was a harmonica live. I guess they don't have the money to bring a whole horn section with them. So musically, it didn't quite work as well, in that I think the album tracks sound better, but the ENERGY was definitely there! And they did have two complete drum sets. :) The whole crowd was totally into the music and jumping up and down and sideways throughout the show. It was great! That was exactly what I needed at the end of a rough week!

(I didn't actually manage to get a good shot of the actual band leader. After my encounter with that draconian bouncer, and because it was a relatively small venue, I decided to play it safe and only whipped out my camera toward the end of the show, when I wouldn't have much to lose on the off-chance they kicked me out. (...which of course I've never actually seen any venue do. That's another pet peeve of mine: unenforced (or worse: selectively enforced) rules that basically reward people who break the rules.))

Back when the show started, it had occurred to me that I had parked my car on Howard Street, where I once got a street cleaning ticket. (Street cleaning starts at 12:01am on that street. What the hell? People are still out! Literally like 20 cars in a row each had a ticket the time I got mine. So they clearly have no intention of cleaning the streets and actually enacted those times just as a source of income. :P) But anyway, I was like, no way I'm going to bother moving it now. This show is going to be worth it even if I get a ticket! :) And yeah, the concert was good enough for that. :)

This story has a bizarre coda:

After the concert, my newfound friend from work (the guy who also got two tickets and wasted one) had to retrieve his jacket from coat check. I told him I'd wait outside. But I was still kinda worried about getting a ticket, so I went back inside to tell him I was going to head out.

On my way back out, two tall guys in the coat check line intentionally block my path and loudly proclaim, "WAIT IN LINE LIKE THE REST OF US!" I think he was drunk. So I reply, "I'm exiting!" Then he's like, "Oh... He's EXITING..." His friends laugh. I find him so obnoxious at this point that I flip him off a couple of inches from his face. His friends are like, "Ooooo...." but they don't do anything as I leave. You have to realize that I can't even remember the last time I flipped someone off. It's just not something I do. Especially to 6-foot tall drunk guys. :P

Immediately afterward I felt kinda bad about it. I felt like I should've taken the high road. Maybe I could've said something like, "We're all having a good time. Why do you have to go and bring us down?" I don't know. :P Maybe flipping him off was the right thing to do. Who knows. So that felt like kind of a bummer end to the evening.

But then I got to my car... and no ticket! No street cleaning tonight. :) Yay! Happy ending to my day after all.

Plus today marks the end of my Project 365. Very eventful day.

I guess I was so pumped that I came home and typed like the longest Project 365/blog entry every. :)

live.pirillo.com - I remember back in the day, making mix tapes for girls. What? How can you not know what mix tapes are? You took two boomboxes, two cassette tapes... and made your own mix tapes full of songs. Now that we don't make those anymore, the personal touch has gone by the wayside. Sending someone a link just isn't personal. This video was originally shared on blip.tv by l0ckergn0me with a No license (All rights reserved) license.

676 downloads for MuseScore, a new day record!
music download software
Strangely enough, since the start of the holiday period, the MuseScore download rate has been going up. With 676 downloads on the 21st of July, this is even a new all time day record.

Analyzing Google Analytics for musescore.org, it looks that the spike comes from direct traffic, from Spanish speaking visitors. Perhaps a school has downloaded MuseScore on all their computers for the next academical year?

More than 5 years ago, Werner Schweer started working on MuseScore.
Since then, the MuseScore project has been growing in every sense:
developers, users, documentation, translations, etc. This week,
MuseScore has surpassed 100.00 downloads. With a Mac release coming out
very soon, this figure will certainly double in 2009.

Future Music Festival 2011

Future Music Festival in Sydney beats a day at the races, by Eva Rinaldi

The Sydney leg of the Future Music Festival had been considerably hyped up for weeks, but I'm pleased to report that for the most part the substance lived up to the hype.
The 30 or so group line up was strong, with most attending wanting to see The Chemical Brothers, Dizzy Rascal, Kesha, Pendulum and MGMT. Well, that's what our spies in high places tell us.

Approximately 55,000 fans filled up the venue, Royal Randwick Racecourse, better known for horses galloping around the track, rather than for people trotting from stage to stage, seeking out their favorite performing artists to grace Sydney. Royal Randwick had never looked so colourful, sounded so loud, or had been so dirty (by the end of the last performances).

The audio distribution was solid to good I thought and the visual effects, signage and support staff were very good. The vibe was awesome, or was that the company I was hanging out with? Quite possibly both.

I found it quite a challenging festival to photography mainly due to the sea of humanity, with the usual elbows in the ribs by other photographers replaced by masses of crowds bumping into myself and camera, but my in-house bodyguard of sorts helped keep most of the rascals at bay (pun intended).

Meeting a group of friendly police officers on horseback was a highlight for me, as was getting to exchange a few photography tips with David the professional photographer, who I think is just too good and genuinely friendly to be called a paparazzi. It was sure a nice change to be surrounded by colleagues who didn't harass me, and only wanted the best, rather than the jealous and nasty ones, but enough about that for now. Aaron from St John's Ambulance, great to meet you also, and I'm glad the emergency body count didn't keep you too busy, but I did witness one person passing out, 3 arrests, and 2 people jumping barriers (all were later caught), but out of the 60,000 or so crowd, that's not bad.

I was impressed by the eats and refreshments. Food was included in the ticket pricing, at least at where I got to hang with the VIP's, and drinks were reasonably priced. Bathroom amenities were decent, with que lines not as bad as you might expect. Security officers and police were awesome to do with, but don't tell that to the fence jumpers who got caught, some rumoured to spend the rest of the night in the clink at Randwick Police Station.

Public transport was well catered for, but there should have been more taxis frequently the area, such was the demand.

Fun level was a 9 out of 10, but I thought media access could have been a bit better catered for, since there was a bit of "cattle treatment" at the event, Mind you, I am very grateful to Future Entertainment Group for helping make this possible. Ok, my ratings out of 10 for the acts I saw...

The Chemical Brothers - 7

James Holdroyd - 9

Dizzy Rascal - 8

Stafford - 6

The Presets - 9

Art VS Science - 7

Kesha - 5

Pendulum - 9

Zane Lowe - 8

MGMT - 8

Mark Ronson & The Business International - 8

Would I do it all over again? Absolutely. It was the day Randwick rocked for real, and I can't wait to do it all over again.
